The American rock group that influenced several major bands including Deep Purple, Styx, and Uriah Heep with their trippy, organ-heavy sounds, slamming rhythms and astonishingly deft interplay between rock motifs and vocal harmony work, VANILLA FUDGE will release their remastered version of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Rock And Roll’ on 2nd March, via Golden Robot Records.
The band started in 1967, and their biggest hit was a muddy, sludgy cover of You Keep Me Hangin’ On (the Holland–Dozier–Holland song originally recorded by The Supremes.) The band are famed for their dilatory heavy-rock arrangements of contemporaneous pop songs.
“Rock and Roll” was the second track on Led Zeppelin’s fourth album released in 1971 and was described by rock critic Robert Christgau as: “simply the most dynamic hard-rock song in music…”
According to Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, the number evolved from a jam session at Headley Grange, Hampshire, England, where the band was recording the album for Atlantic Records.. According to legend, drummer John Bonham began playing a drum intro that sounded like it came from Little Richard’s Keep A-Knockin to which Page added a Chuck Berry-style guitar riff.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio lists the Led Zep number as one of the few selected rock songs that have shaped rock ‘n’ roll.
Vanilla Fudge celebrated their 50-Year Anniversary in 2017 and are still rocking the world hard as ever.
