Producer, vocalist and songwriter Danny Adams has teamed up with renowned female vocalist Stacey Lou Thomas to bring us a very special duet – titled ‘Friends‘ – for the holiday season.
I hark from the Seventies, so, for me, the boy/girl duet is all about sequins, woollen sweaters, long gazes towards horizons of hope, tear filled glances, teasing tongues, shiny lip licking and melancholy contemplations … all set against a glittering tinsel background. Pop into any pound shop and pick yourself up a copy of Peters & Lee ‘Welcome Home’ or Johnny Mathis & Diahann Carroll ‘You Are So Beautiful’ to get an idea of my chocolate box memories
For a love duet to work, it must have a sense of cheesy sentimentality – an enigmatic kitsch value – so that it can provide the listener with an immediate ‘hit‘ of emotional gratification. This winning new duet is exactly right for my ears – satisfyingly wistful and perfectly nostalgic. The song has a huge “Wall of Sound” – there could be as many as 21 session musicians in the studio … (in fact all the instruments are played by Danny.)
The lyrics have a nougatine sweetness to them “Walk with me my friends/Our journey has no end …” but any cloying sickness that you might feel in the pit of your stomach is quickly dissipated by a sharply picked guitar solo. It burns fever into the song just at the right moment. And all the while, agile keys flicker and flutter around the lush fabrics of the number. Danny’s breathy voice is moldering and greasy - while Stacey Lou’s is darker and more chocolatey. It’s a match made in lametta-heaven.
This is a rich gourmet package. A confection you will not be able to resist. Put it on while you dress the tree. And drink a glass of sweet sherry.
