Newcastle-based four-piece Bridie Jackson and The Arbour are an eclectic group of folk musicians. They create hauntingly ethereal sounds, yet fused with dark shades of agony- and manage to inject contradictions galore – with their combination of bright melody and dark lyricism.
Sitting somewhere between the lushness of Norah Jones and the strangeness of Joanna Newsom, Bridie Jackson and The Arbour create songs that are interwoven with rich harmonies of melancholy joy, often skipping down paths of ecstatic dreams, before discovering that each journey is fraught with pain.
They now release their New Single – ‘We Talked Again’ from the forthcoming album. We had a listen:
Some of the sounds on this track are icy cold – others are strangled by a dark bindweed of strings.
The velvet voice shines as she climbs – wisping to excel above the sparking tails of suffering pinched stars. These are juxtaposed neatly against the nightmare of mourning cellos that fall beneath.
Then voices move in harmony – which is a lush and gentle thing – and they lay together like cradles of willow fronds bridging a threatening swamp. And with their grace, it turns out that this is the only safe way to cross.
